As a big fan of both the The Lord of the Rings and the The Hobbit trilogies and the many incredible literary works that inspired the films, I can't help but feel rather apprehensive when it comes to the release of a film about the life of Professor Tolkien. You know how some things should just be left alone? To many fans, Professor Tolkien is to be revered for his unprecedented contributions to literature, but the man himself should be allowed to rest in peace.
Not that his life wouldn't be interesting enough, it most certainly is! One of those stories that are so good, they couldn't possibly come from the imagination of a human being, they can only be reality.
However, my apprehension stems from a fear that this film may not do the great literary legend the justice he deserves.
Is Nicholas Hoult 'good enough' to play the young John Roland? It has been the subject of many fan forum discussions, ever since the casting was announced. All I can say is: I'm willing to give both him and the film the benefit of the doubt.
The good thing about this film could be that it will hopefully introduce many new readers to the books and possibly also to Peter Jackson's films based on his work. That can only ever be positive. But Professor Tolkien is not a celebrity, and we, the fans of his work, definitely want to protect him and his legacy from that dubious status.
But, as I said: benefit of the doubt...
Take a look at the official trailer for the film Tolkien, which is scheduled for release in May.
What's your first impression? Are you looking forward to the film? I would be happy to hear from you.
